Maharashtra Housing Area and Development Authority (Mhada) was constituted to tackle the housing problems in the city and over the years it has built many housing units for low and middle income groups.

In the year 2013, the price of some of the flats were high as Mhada had to spent 80 crore for claiming the land that BMC had reserved for other purpose. But you can try your luck this time in the Mhada Lottery 2014, which will be offering flats lower by Rs 5-10 lakh as there will be no such extra cost.

Next year’s lottery will have in offer 30,000 housing units in the areas including Powai, Mahim and a few suburbs of Mumbai. It is estimated that LIG flats will have carpet area of 330 square feet each, while the MIG flats will have a carpet area of 640 square feet each. The lottery is expected to e held during Diwali, which is almost round the corner.

In this regard, N K Sudhanshu, the chief officer of Mumbai’s MHADA board, said, “Next year, the prices will be lower because none of the projects require additional expenses as far as land is concerned.” Also, other charges that are usually levied will also be brought down to make the houses affordable. He added, “The proposed subsidy will depend on the size of the plot and the amount of rebate is still being worked out”.

This year only 1,244 houses were sold through lottery and it is estimated that the number will come down to 1,000 in 2014, said real estate expert. While it was promised by the senior authority that Mhada will take back the housing stock from private developers to be sold through Mhada lottery only. But it is a very small number and cannot cater to the lakhs of applicants as in Mhada’s last five lotteries, more than 11.25 lakh applicants’ filled application for 16,053 houses.

Mhada Forms 2014 for its latest lottery scheme would be available online, which can be downloaded from their website. You can also visit their administrative office, if you have any problem in applying online.

Mhada has won accolades for its fair functioning and its schemes are basically for lower income groups, helping them buy their dream abode in Mumbai.
