When a child is in the toddler stage, their stubbornness can often be cute however, when they hit school age this can quickly become not so cute. This is because their unruliness quickly becomes a big problem for teachers, parents, and caretakers. One of the first steps in fixing this problem, is to as a parent, admit that you have a problem controlling your child. When you take the time to admit to this, you are well on your way to overcoming the overall problems. Here, are a few other tips that may also help.
One of the most important tips on how to handle an unruly child is to be sure that you are setting clear boundaries. You need to be sure that your child knows exactly what is expected of them. It may be shocking, but, a lot of experts have found that children prefer boundaries, and once they are established, the child will follow the rules of the home better.
Be sure that you are careful in using threats as form of punishment, but, if you do be sure that you follow through on those threats. If you are not ready to make good on threats, then by no means do not make them. One of the most common threats would be: if you don’t shape up you will go to bed without any supper.
Be sure that you take the time to spend time with your child. However, this does not mean that you need to plan activities for you and your child every minute of the day. Simple things like taking your child with you when you run errands or reading them a book will be enough to satisfy any child. This will also help to reduce unruliness in your child.
Next, make sure that you are sticking to reasonable punishments. Remember, each child is different so a punishment that may work for one child, may not work for another. In knowing this, you need to make sure that you judge your punishment based on the child. However, you should never use chores as a form of punishment. Chores are considered part of the family and, family chores should be shared.
When your child is good, reward them. When you take the time to use positive reinforcement you are sending a clear message to your child. It has been proven that children who have received positive reinforcement have followed the house rules better than those children that have not.
If you find that your actions still have not changed your child’s unruliness, then it may be time for a trip to your pediatrician. Children with ADHD or other forms of psychological problems may seem unruly but, in fact, they are actually acting out as a way to gain attention. Medication or, a simple diet change will mean the world of difference when it comes to controlling an unruly child.
